Papers of William Jenks, the Jenks family, and related Wright, Goldsbury, and Russell family members. A 1797 graduate and overseer of Harvard, Jenks was a Congregational clergyman, chaplain in the War of 1812 and of the Mass. Senate; professor of oriental languages and English literature, and overseer of Bowdoin College; Biblical scholar and writer; antiquarian; librarian of the Mass. Historical Soc.; and connected with the following: First Church of Bath, Me.; Seaman's Mission (Boston); Mariner's Church, Sailor's Home, City Missionary Soc., Shawmut Church, and Green St. Church, all of Boston; and other historical and charitable organizations. (Cont'd) Correspondence and misc. papers, diaries, account books, memoranda, sermons, poetry, history notes, oriental language notes, sketchbooks, genealogies, commonplace-books, and school notebooks. William Jenks was born in Newton, Massachusetts on November 25, 1778. He received an A.B. from Harvard College in 1797, an A.M. in 1800 and an S.T.D. in 1842. He also received two degrees from Bowdoin College: an S.T.D. in 1825 and an L.L.D. in 1862. Jenks served as pastor of churches in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Bath, Maine before joining the faculty of Bowdoin College as professor of Oriental and English literature.
